Rupert Hartley (b. UK) is a British visual artist based in Hove, East Sussex. His practice focuses primarily on painting, with a sustained interest in structure, surface, and the visual language of abstraction.
Hartley studied Printed Textile Design at the Glasgow School of Art, where he developed a strong foundation in pattern, colour, and material process. He went on to complete an MA in Art in Architecture at the University of East London, a programme that deepened his engagement with spatial composition and the intersection of art and the built environment.
Hartley’s work explores the relationship between geometric form, repetition, and colour. Using both playful and systematic processes, he revisits and reinterprets formalist traditions—particularly in relation to the grid. His paintings, often produced in series, range from intimate works on paper to large-scale canvases and wall-based installations. The resulting compositions balance optical intensity with a human, tactile sensibility, bridging decorative and architectural space.
His work has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across the UK and internationally. Notable exhibitions include:
Concrete Art, Pulchri Studio, The Hague, Netherlands. (2024)
Hard Paper, Phoenix Art Space, Brighton. (2024)
Inter-scenic, Nordic Art Agency, Malmö, Sweden. (2023)
In addition to his studio practice, Hartley has undertaken public art commissions, collaborative projects, and teaching roles. His interdisciplinary background informs a broader interest in how art can activate and reframe space—whether in galleries, architectural contexts, or public environments.
He currently lives and works in Hove, East Sussex.
